In 2006, there were over 230 deaths and nearly 4,000 people seriously
injured on the roads of London. Of these people, 10 were killed and 136
seriously injured as a direct result of a collision where a driver or
rider was, in legal terminology, ‘failing to comply with an automatic
traffic signal’. In addition to the tragic human cost, the disruption
and cost to the day-to-day lives of Londoners and visitors caught up in
the ensuing and inevitable congestion, is very significant. Collisions
at road junctions, whether fatal or not, also dramatically affect the
smooth running of the capital.
‘Jumping a red light’ can become an endemic culture that
has to be addressed. That’s why Transport for London (TfL) and the
London Safety Camera Partnership (LSCP) have a strategy to educate members
of the public who choose to ignore or simply don’t observe a traffic
light on red.
By using a Workshop environment to encourage inter-active discussion
about this issue, both TfL and LSCP aim to give drivers and riders the
information and knowledge they need to make better driving decisions.
This, in turn, will reduce the number of collisions at traffic light junctions
and therefore reduce the human and financial cost to London in particular
and the UK in general.
